I know everyone says you need a $2000 mount for deep sky photos, but my $400 one has been perfect for a year now

Honestly, I get where you're coming from, but it depends on what you're shooting. A $400 mount might be fine for wide field stuff with a short lens, where tracking errors aren't as obvious. Try doing five minute exposures at 1000mm focal length, though. That's where the cheap gears show their limits with star trails and failed subs. For some targets and setups, the basic gear works until it really, really doesn't.
