Spent 6 hours stacking the Veil Nebula, turns out my flat frames were the problem
I've been shooting the Veil Nebula for three nights straight, and my stacks kept coming out with this weird gradient and dust donuts that no amount of background extraction could fix. After redoing the calibration like 4 times, I finally realized my flat frames were taken at a different focus position than my lights, so the optics were casting different shadows. It took a full Saturday afternoon of swapping lenses and re-shooting flats to get a clean integration. Anyone else had flats sabotage a whole processing session, or is it just my bad habit of rushing calibration at 2am?
