The $40 solar filter I almost skipped saved my camera sensor

Bought a cheap glass solar filter off eBay for my telescope setup, figured it was just a toy, but after shooting the partial eclipse last month in Phoenix it worked flawlessly while my buddy's expensive DIY filter let a hot spot through and fried his DSLR, anyone else trust budget astro gear more than the big box brands?
