TIL the milky way core is visible from a random pullout near Fort Davis

I drove out to the McDonald Observatory area last month just to see what the dark sky was like. Pulled into a dirt lot off Route 118 around 11pm and the stars were so thick it looked fake. I could actually see the dust lanes in the core with my own eyes, no camera needed. Has anyone else had a random roadside spot beat their planned dark sky site?
