Trying to get a decent shot of the Orion Nebula from my backyard in Phoenix

I spent like 4 hours last night just trying to get my camera's focus perfect, and it still looks a little soft. Anyone have a good trick for nailing focus on a DSLR in the dark?

Focus is the worst part of astro for me too. A bahtinov mask helps if you can get one.

Try live view zoomed in on a bright star to manually focus.
