Widefield vs closeup on the Orion Nebula - I chose wrong
I spent a clear night last winter trying to decide between a 135mm lens for the whole constellation or a 500mm scope to zoom in on the nebula core. Went with the 500mm because I wanted detail, but ended up with a blurry mess because my tracking mount couldnt handle the longer focal length. The 2 minute subs were all streaky and I wasted 4 hours freezing my fingers off. Anyone else regret going too narrow too fast with their gear?

Felt that pain, my first deep space shot looked like a comet with a cold.

Comet with a cold" haha that's perfect. My first try at a nebula looked like someone smudged a dirty thumbprint on a black piece of paper. I was so proud of it too, thought I'd captured the Orion Nebula, but it was just a blurry orange blob with some weird streaks. Took me a whole week to figure out my focus was actually set to infinity plus some random screw in the telescope. Funny how those early fails make the good shots feel that much better now.
