Just realized my 1952 ranch has smaller closets than the house I grew up in, and the county site explains why
I was poking around the Fulton County property records site last week and pulled up the old permit file for my house, which was built in 1952 in the Collier Heights area. It turns out the average new home back then was around 950 square feet, and mine is 1,100, so it was actually considered roomy for the time. I got to thinking about how my parents' place out in Cobb had closets you could walk into, and this house has these little 2 foot deep ones with one rod and that's it. The permit file showed the original owners added a carport in 1961 for $475, which sounded wild to me until I did the math on what that is today. My neighbor on the corner has the same floor plan and she says her mother raised four kids in it, which honestly made me feel a little spoiled for complaining. I guess people just owned less stuff back then and did not think twice about it. Has anyone else here gone down the rabbit hole on their home's old permits and learned something that made them see the place differently?
