My backyard drainage fix took 8 months and a lot of cussing

I thought I knew what I was doing when I bought this house in East Atlanta last year. The backyard turned into a swamp every time it rained, and I figured a simple French drain would fix it in a weekend. Well, I dug the trench wrong twice, hit a gas line (thankfully just a small one), and had to call a buddy who does grading for a living. He came over and showed me the slope was actually going toward the house foundation instead of away. After ripping out the first attempt and redoing the whole thing with a proper outlet pipe, it finally works. But it took from March all the way through October to get right. Has anyone else dealt with their yard grading being totally opposite of what they thought?

Man that sounds about right, I swear every yard project turns into a three season ordeal no matter how simple it seems at first.

Lol why does everything take 3 times longer than you think it will? I have given up on timelines completely.
