Rant: my neighbor's bamboo spread under the fence after 3 years and now I'm fighting shoots in my yard every week

Last month I pulled up 47 bamboo shoots that had crept under the slab from his backyard in Decatur, and the HOA won't do anything about it because it's not on their approved plant list, anyone else dealing with invasive plants from a neighbor?

Gotta be honest, I used to be pretty chill about stuff like this until a buddy of mine had the same problem with bamboo from his neighbor's yard. He spent one entire summer digging up roots and it almost ruined his garden, totally changed my mind on this. How's the HOA not stepping in to at least mediate this? Wait, you said the HOA won't touch it because it's not on some list - that's wild, have you tried talking to the neighbor directly?

Hear me out but the bamboo is just doing what plants do and your neighbor probably had no idea it would spread like that. It sucks for sure but fighting it might just be part of having a yard in this climate.

I gotta push back on the "plants just doing what plants do" angle. Look, bamboo is an invasive species in a lot of places, not just a normal garden plant. If your neighbor planted something that sends runners under fences and pops up in your yard, that's on them to contain it, not you to just accept it. In my experience, most people know running bamboo spreads like crazy, unless they bought it from a clueless big box store with zero info. Your mileage may vary, but letting it slide because "it's just nature" feels like giving a pass to someone who didn't do their homework.
