Termite swarms in March are not a sign you already have damage

Every spring I see folks in the neighborhood panicking over a swarm of termites around their porch light and dumping $600 on a full tent job the same week. Swarming just means a mature colony is sending out flyers somewhere nearby, and in most cases it's a colony under a stump or in a neighbor's yard, not one chewing on your house yet. Has anyone actually gotten a second inspection that said do a spot treatment instead of the full tent, and did it hold up?
