Shifter bushings felt fine until a mechanic pointed out the slop, $18 fix changed everything

I drove a 2004 Honda Civic for like 5 years and thought the shifter was just naturally loose and rubbery. Last month I took it to a small shop in Tulsa for a clutch check and the guy wiggled the stick side to side and said 'you know these bushings are shot, right?' I laughed it off but he showed me how much play there was compared to a newer one on the lot. Bought a $18 brass bushing kit online, swapped them in a parking lot over a weekend. Night and day difference, shifts feel crisp now. Has anyone else had a mechanic point out a cheap fix you'd been ignoring for ages?

Those bushings were probably fine and you just got talked into spending money on a car that old.
