Unpopular opinion: 94 octane gas is a waste in everyday drivers

I kept hearing this guy at the Shell station near my shop in Tampa say 'premium only' for his Camry. I think he's buying into marketing hype. I've run 87 in my F-150 for 120,000 miles and never had a ping or knock issue. Anyone else think most people are just throwing money away at the pump?

Did you hear about my buddy Mark? He put 93 in his old Honda Accord for like two years thinking it would make it faster, then his mechanic told him the owner's manual literally says 87 is fine. I felt so bad for him, he'd been dropping an extra 10 bucks a fill up for nothing.

Nah, but premium gas burns cleaner so maybe his engine will last longer...

Gotta admit I've done something similar but way dumber. I put diesel in a rental once (long story involving a distracted conversation and a green handle) and spent an embarrassing amount of time on YouTube trying to figure out if I could just "burn it off." Spoiler alert: you cannot. Mark's story hits close to home because I also refuse to read owner's manuals, which is probably why my check engine light is basically a nightlight at this point.
