Warning: My alternator died on I-35 in Austin at rush hour last Friday

I was cruising along at 75 when the dash lights started flickering like a rave, then everything died and I coasted to the shoulder with no power steering. Had to call a buddy to bring a jump box and follow me to a shop 3 miles away. Anyone else had an alternator go out with zero warning signs beforehand?

Read somewhere that modern alternators just fail without warning sometimes...

Wow, @grant155, that's crazy. I thought alternators at least gave you some warning with dim lights or a weird noise before they die.
