Rant: I thought retainer agreements were a scam, until a client in Denver ghosted me on $3,800
For two years I ran my little IT support business on handshake deals and email quotes, mostly because I thought asking small business owners to sign a retainer made me look desperate. Then a client in Denver stopped returning calls in March, and I was out $3,800 for six weeks of work I had already done. A CPA I share an office with asked me one question: "What happens when they just stop paying?" So I pulled a simple one-page agreement off a template site, had everyone sign before any work starts, and I have not chased a single unpaid invoice in five months. Anyone else switch to retainers after getting burned, and did you lose clients who hated signing them?
