That 'trust your gut' advice from my old boss cost me a $600 contract last month

He told me to skip the background check on a new vendor because they seemed solid, but they ghosted mid-delivery and I had to refund the client, so has anyone else had a gut feeling completely backfire on them?

nah man that gut feeling thing is just your brain being lazy and calling it wisdom lol. i swear half the time my gut tells me stuff it's just me not wanting to do the boring paperwork part of running a business. your gut didn't cost you 600 bucks, your boss's bad advice and you not doing the basic check did. next time someone tells you to skip a background check on a 600 dollar deal, tell them to put their money where their mouth is and cover your losses if it goes south. seriously, "they seemed solid" is just fancy talk for "i was too tired to google them.

Did you ever check if your state has an unfair claims law that could've helped you recover anything? Most people don't realize verbal agreements can actually hold up in small claims court if you have any kind of proof like texts or emails hinting at the deal. The real kicker is that many states let you record phone calls with one party consent, which could've given you evidence if they admitted anything later. Even without a written contract, judges sometimes side with you if you can show a clear pattern of behavior like payments or deliveries started and then stopped. Might be worth talking to a legal aid clinic just to see if you still have options, the statute of limitations on oral contracts varies a lot.
