Took me 3 months to realize our client's billing portal was just down and not a security breach
We spent weeks rebuilding our entire invoicing system and switching vendors before someone finally checked if the issue was on their end, has anyone else wasted time chasing ghosts because a vendor didn't communicate a simple outage?

Did you see that article about a company that spent months on a fake ransomware attack?

Oh for sure @charles_baker28, we caught a company faking a breach three years ago and the whole thing was a mess.

That whole situation sounds like a nightmare. With the faked breach we dealt with, the thing that actually worked was bringing in a third party auditor before we pointed fingers. We had a small team that tracked the data logs from day one and compared them against the company's own timeline. The gaps were obvious once someone actually looked, like emails that showed employees getting "ransomware" warnings before the attack even supposedly started. It took a lot of patience, but having a clear paper trail made the confrontation way easier than just yelling about it. Plus, it helped us figure out what not to do next time, since the whole thing was a huge waste of money and trust.
