Used to cold call 60 companies a week, now I book 8 demos with a $40 list and way less sweat
Two years back I was dialing 60 numbers a day for a payroll service in Columbus, and my close rate was under 1%. A rep I met at a chamber lunch in Dublin told me to stop spraying and start picking, so I pulled a 400 contact list of HR heads at 50 to 200 seat shops and sent short notes about their job postings. Now I book about 8 demos a week off 40 touches, and the calls actually start warm instead of me reading a script. Curious if anyone else here made the swap from volume dialing to tight lists, and what size list you keep before it stops working.
The "stop spraying and start picking" line hit home for me. I used to burn through dials like it was a contest nobody was winning, and my voicemail greeting probably knew my script better than I did. Cutting my list down and actually reading job postings before I reach out made way more difference than any new dialer ever did.
