Debate: that $40 water filter I brought on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia either saved my stomach or wasted pack weight

On one hand it kept me from drinking straight from streams that probably had cow runoff, but on the other hand it added a pound to my pack and I ended up just boiling water half the time anyway has anyone else flipped back and forth on these things?

Yeah honestly just boil your water and save the weight. Those filters are overkill half the time.

yeah @richard_young80 totally, I quit carrying mine after the first trip and just boiled everything, never got sick.

My buddy Dave tried the no filter thing on a trip in the Smokies and ended up drinking straight from a stream. He spent 3 days with the worst stomach cramps of his life, swore he saw little creatures swimming in the toilet water. I'll stick with my filter, but mostly because I'm too lazy to build a fire half the time.
