Finally got through the blowdown section on the PCT near Big Bear

We hit a huge area of downed trees about 8 miles north of Onyx Summit that the maps said was clear. It took our group almost 4 hours to cover just 2 miles, picking our way over, under, and around all the logs. Has anyone else dealt with that stretch recently and found a better way around?

Maps are always wrong after a storm...

Maps are tools not promises. Storms change the ground but they don't change the fact that those maps were made from someone's best guess to begin with. Half the time people just expect too much from a piece of paper or a phone screen. If you go out there thinking the map is gospel you're setting yourself up. Better to read the land and use the map as backup.

Maybe the real trail is the new path you just made.

That "maps said was clear" part is a perfect example of how you can't always trust the official info to be up to date. It feels like everything from road closures to trail conditions is just a best guess these days.
