Got caught in a hailstorm above treeline on the Pawnee-Buchanan loop and it made the whole trip
Two Augusts ago I was three days into the Pawnee-Buchanan loop in Colorado when a storm rolled in fast around 1pm near Buchanan Pass. No trees anywhere, so I just crouched behind a boulder with my pack over my head while pea sized hail bounced off my shoulders for maybe ten minutes. Then the sky cleared, the trail turned into this steaming green tunnel, and I ate a squished peanut butter sandwich watching clouds pour over the divide. My buddy still says that was the worst day of his life and the best view he has ever seen. What do you all carry for exposed sections like that, or do you just watch the sky and gamble?
