Guy at the trailhead in Asheville said he plans 8 miles a day but stops at 2, got me thinking about my own numbers
I ran into this hiker at a trailhead outside Asheville last month who said he maps out 8 mile days but almost always camps by mile 2 because he stops to fish every creek. It made me look at my own plans, where I do the same thing with photo stops, and I started building in way less mileage than I used to. Does anyone else plan routes around what you'll actually do out there instead of what you could do?
But honestly, isn't that kind of a cop out? If you keep planning tiny days just because you might stop a lot, you never find out what you can really do, and some of my best days on trail were the ones where I pushed past what felt easy. The trip is the trip either way, so why not set a real goal and just see what happens?
