How outdated online maps ruined my planned route in the Rockies
I relied on the national forest service's digital map for a three-day loop. Turns out, a major bridge was out, forcing a ten-mile detour. The site listed the route as open with no alerts. Now I mix online planning with recent hiker reports to avoid surprises.

So you use hiker reports now. How recent do they need to be to avoid another surprise bridge closure?

I get that digital maps are reliable, but your mileage may vary. Mine once sent me down a logging road that hadn't been a trail in twenty years.

Digital maps are still super reliable for most trips! Trail conditions can change fast after storms or fires, even before official updates get posted. Always carrying a paper map as backup shows good planning for any real outdoor adventure.
