I finally bought a $150 satellite messenger for a solo trip in the Sawtooths

I got it for safety, but the peace of mind was so huge I barely looked at the views. Some friends say it's a crutch that ruins the real solo experience. Do you think these devices make backpacking safer or just less adventurous?

My buddy broke his ankle on the PCT last year. His inReach got a helicopter there in 90 minutes. Call that a crutch if you want, I call it smart.

Wait, a helicopter in 90 minutes? That's crazy fast...

Honestly, it's not about adventure. It's about not making a ranger or some volunteer risk their neck to find you if you slip.

And isn't that the same mindset we've lost everywhere else? People used to think about the burden they put on others before charging into something half-cocked, but now it's all about what's fastest or easiest for me personally. A little foresight goes a long way, whether you're on a trail or just living your daily life.
