I finally get why people section hike the AT instead of thru hiking after my trip to Grayson Highlands
I spent 3 days on the Appalachian Trail near Grayson Highlands State Park in Virginia last April and kept running into the same group of 5 section hikers at every shelter. They told me they knock out about 100 miles a year and have been chipping away at the whole trail since 2019, and honestly watching them enjoy their campfire and not stress about mileage made me rethink my whole thru hike obsession. Has anyone else switched from chasing a full thru hike to just doing sections, and do you ever feel like you are missing out?
