I thought I was nailing my food carries until a guy on the JMT asked to see my bear can at Reds Meadow
For 3 seasons I packed my bear can by just cramming everything in, and I always ended up digging for 10 minutes at camp while my dinner got cold. At Reds Meadow last August a guy watched me repack and asked why I was putting my heaviest stuff on top, since it crushes the oatmeal and wastes space. He had me flip the whole thing, light stuff on the bottom, denser food packed tight around the sides, and I fit 2 extra days of food in the same can. Now I'm wondering if I'm the only one who learned this by accident, or do most people plan their can layout before the trip? Curious how you all pack yours and whether anyone switched from a can to a hang and never looked back.
