Just got back from the Lost Coast Trail and the tide charts are no joke, almost got pinned against a cliff north of Shelter Cove.

Did you have to climb or just wait it out?

Man, that stretch is no joke! I got caught out there once and had to scramble up a sketchy, loose gully to avoid the waves. Now I set an alarm on my watch for two hours before high tide, not just one. That extra buffer saved my butt last time when a section took way longer to cross than I thought. What did you end up doing to get clear?

Actually, the tide tables for that area show a two hour buffer is still cutting it close on a big tidal day. I got pinned for forty minutes once because I went three hours before high tide and still misjudged the surge. Now I plan my entire day around a four hour window and check the swell forecast too, since a big west wind can push water in faster.

Had a buddy who almost got swept off the rocks near Port Renfrew last fall. He went out 3 hours before high tide thinking he had plenty of time, but a swell from a storm way out in the Pacific rolled in faster than predicted. Had to ditch his gear and climb up a wet, crumbly cliff face with waves lapping at his heels. Took him like an hour to get down and find his rod in the rocks after the tide dropped back out.
