Just realized most people are way too optimistic about water sources on the JMT

Kept seeing trip reports saying 'plenty of creeks in August' but when I hiked the section near Evolution Valley last year half of them were dry. Carry a full 4 liter capacity through the Sierra or you'll be begging other hikers for a refill. Has anyone else had dry creek surprises mess up their mileage?

Half of them were dry" is the kind of thing that makes you wonder if people are just posting what they hope will happen... maybe the real trick is checking satellite snowpack data from a few weeks before you go instead of relying on those trip reports.

Funny enough @the_jake that data still lies sometimes though.

Totally used to think trip reports were gospel truth. Then I went to the Three Sisters last March based on a report that said "good coverage" and ended up postholing every step for a mile. Now I check Snotel sites and satellite imagery the week before, like Jake said. That satellite data from a couple weeks out has saved me from bad beta more times than I can count. Lesson learned hard.
