My brother's take on the 'perfect' campsite changed my whole trip plan

He said his idea of a good spot is 'anywhere you can't hear a car for three days straight'. I was planning a route near the Blue Ridge Parkway, but now I'm looking at the Cranberry Wilderness instead. Anyone have a favorite truly quiet stretch of trail?

Your brother is totally right about not hearing a car. That's the real goal. Cranberry is a great call for that. I spent a week out there last fall and the silence is heavy, in a good way. You'll hear wind and maybe a creek, that's it. Makes the parkway feel like a busy street.

But what if that kind of silence is actually bad for some people? I had a buddy go to a spot like that and he said the quiet got to his head after two days. No background noise at all made him jumpy, like his own thoughts were too loud. He ended up playing podcasts on his phone just to feel normal. Maybe total silence isn't the goal for everyone.

Honestly I used to think total quiet was the only way to go, but your buddy's story makes a lot of sense. Tbh some people just need a little background hum to feel okay.
