My tent pole snapped in the middle of nowhere on the Highline Trail...
It was during a storm near a ridge, and I had to rig it with duct tape and a trekking pole to avoid getting soaked. Has anyone else had a piece of gear fail at the worst possible moment?

Woke up at 3am in a downpour on the Appalachian Trail to find my sleeping bag had somehow soaked through even with a tarp over it. Spent the rest of the night shivering under a garbage bag I found in my pack, trying to convince myself hypothermia wasn't setting in. The bag was supposed to be "water resistant." Learned that means "resistant to being helpful when you actually need it.

Oh man, that garbage bag move is pure desperation. I've totally been there-my "waterproof" jacket turned into a sponge on day two of a trip, so I learned my tent is basically just an expensive suggestion for staying dry.
