PSA: The trail to Lake Serene is a whole different animal now

Hiked it last May and it was a simple, clear path... went back this past weekend and the last mile is basically a rock scramble. They must have had a huge slide over the winter. My buddy actually said, 'Did we take a wrong turn into a climbing gym?' Has anyone else seen a route change that much in under a year?

My friend tried to hike the old Miner's Ridge trail last month and got completely lost. The forest service had rerouted it after a washout and the new path was just flagged tape through a creek bed. He said it felt like a totally different hike from the year before.

That reroute through a creek bed sounds like a total nightmare. It's crazy how one bad storm can completely change a trail to the point where GPS data from last year is useless. I've seen it happen a few times in the Cascades where the "new" route is just a scramble until they get real funding to build a proper path.

Always figured trails stayed the same, but that's a wild change.

The PCT reroute near Hart's Pass added three extra miles last fall.
