Rant: Wasted $200 on a fancy ultralight tent that fell apart after 2 trips on the Appalachian Trail

That tent's zipper seized up in the rain on day 3 near Springer Mountain and I ended up taping it shut with duct tape for the rest of the hike, so has anyone else had a pricey piece of gear totally fail on them?

Oh man, that really stinks! I used to think higher price automatically meant better quality, but stories like yours have totally changed my mind. Now I'm way more careful about reading real user reviews before I drop any serious cash on gear.

Well that's rough, at least my expensive tent failed in the driveway before I even got to the trail.

Yeah but "expensive tent failed in the driveway" is actually a total win dude. I'd way rather find out my gear is junk ten feet from my car than three days into a trip where it's pouring rain and I'm miles from anywhere. That driveway failure probably saved you a miserable weekend and maybe even a dangerous situation. Sometimes getting burned before you leave is the best lesson you can get.
