Spent 3 days hauling 42 pounds in the Tetons before I figured out my pack was all wrong
Two summers back I did the Teton Crest Trail out of Jackson with a base weight around 42 pounds, and by day two my shoulders were wrecked. A guy named Dave from Colorado camped next to me at Death Canyon Shelf and asked why my food bag was hanging off the back instead of packed low and tight. When I got home I weighed everything and found 6 pounds of stuff I never touched the whole trip. Now here's my question: do you pack your heavy stuff low and centered, or do you keep it high up near your shoulders? I've heard both from veteran hikers and I want to know what works on long routes.
