Update: My trail log just crossed 1,000 miles and it made me wonder if tracking distance is even the point.

I hit the mark on the Superior Hiking Trail last week, but now I'm debating whether focusing on the number cheapens the experience or gives a goal worth aiming for.

Got so caught up tracking my book list one year I forgot to actually enjoy reading. Spent more time logging titles and ratings than getting lost in stories. Felt like a weird homework assignment. Now I just pick up whatever looks good and sometimes don't even finish it, lol. The number stopped mattering once I let go of the count.

You said "number stopped mattering once I let go of the count" and that really hit me. But here's something nobody's brought up yet - what if tracking actually does matter for people with bad memories? I forget what I read last month half the time. Not having a list means I rebuy books I've already read or recommend things I barely remember. There's a middle ground between obsessing over stats and keeping zero record at all. Maybe just jot down the title and a sentence about how it made you feel. Keep something for your future self who won't remember a thing.

Remember when we all got obsessed with step counts.
