Vent: I thought the 'no fires' rule in the Mojave was overkill until last month
Did a 3 day loop near Joshua Tree. Saw the signs but figured a small, careful fire would be fine. The wind picked up one night and a single ember lit a patch of dry grass in seconds. We stomped it out fast, but it was scary. Anyone else have a rule they learned to respect the hard way?

Man, that's terrifying. I learned the same lesson with the "no drones" rule in a state park (it spooked a whole herd of elk, not good). Now I just follow the posted signs, no questions asked.

Ever think those rules were just for show? I used to, until a buddy's drone crashed and almost started a brush fire... now I get it. Some things you just have to learn the hard way.

Sometimes it takes seeing the real danger to make the rules click, doesn't it?

Yeah, I saw a guy's drone get taken out by a hawk at Yellowstone once. Bird just saw it as a big plastic pigeon and went for it. Rules are there for a reason.
