Neighbor told me to skip the dechlorinator, and I lost 4 fish in 2 days
My next door neighbor Rick has kept a koi pond in his yard off Route 9 in Poughkeepsie for like 15 years, so when he told me to just let the hose water sit in the sun for an hour instead of buying dechlorinator, I figured he knew what he was talking about. I did the top-off on a Saturday morning, skipped the bottle, and by Sunday night two goldfish were floating and the other two died by Monday. Turns out his city water comes from a different source than mine, and my tap runs way heavier on chloramine, which doesn't gas off just from sitting out. I tested it afterward and the reading was bad enough that I felt sick about it. Anyone else run into this, where advice worked great for one person's water but wrecked yours?

Honestly though, your neighbor probably saved you a ton of money over the years if he'd been right, and one bad batch doesn't mean the whole idea is dumb. The real problem sounds like you never tested your own water before trusting somebody else's setup, which is a you thing, not a Rick thing. Sitting water out does work fine for plain chlorine, and a lot of people run ponds for years that way without losing anything. Next time just grab a test kit first and check your own numbers before you change anything, that part is on you either way.
