Saw a koi pond at the Columbus zoo last weekend and the water was so green you couldn't see 6 inches down
I was there with my niece and we stood at the railing for ten minutes trying to spot any fish at all. The whole thing was pea soup, thick enough that a couple of kids were asking if the fish died. Meanwhile my little 150 gallon setup at home is clearer than that, and I am not doing anything fancy, just a sponge filter and barley straw. It made me wonder if they run that pond on some huge budget and still fight the same algae everyone else does. Anybody else seen a public pond go green like that and know what they do to fix it?
Man, that's such a bummer for those kids, they just want to see some fish! I feel you on this one, it's weird when a huge zoo pond looks worse than a little backyard setup. My guess is those big ponds have it rough because of all the sun, runoff, and way too many fish pooping in there, and fixing it takes a ton of money and staff time. Barley straw and a sponge filter really can work wonders on a small tank, so it stinks when the big guys can't seem to get it right. Hope your niece got to see at least one koi peek out!
