Cheap shelf brackets finally gave out after 14 months of abuse
The plastic brackets on my storage shelf snapped last Tuesday when I was loading a 30 pound box of potting soil. I bought them for $12 at the big box store thinking they'd hold up fine. Nope. The whole left side sagged and dumped everything onto my rain barrel. I replaced them with steel ones for $18 and added a 2x4 support beam underneath for good measure. Anyone else learn the hard way that plastic brackets just don't cut it for heavy yard stuff?

Did yours fail right in the middle of a project too? Mine snapped on a Saturday when I was trying to get all my fall stuff put away before it rained. Had a shelf full of clay pots and old paint cans come crashing down on my foot, hurt like hell. The crazy part is those cheap brackets looked fine right up until they just gave out, no warning at all. I bolted a piece of 2x6 across the back of my whole shelf after that and it has been rock solid for two years now. Plastic has no business holding anything heavier than a bag of chips.
