Dad's old shed trick with a broom handle actually worked
I spent years dealing with my shed roof sagging in the middle because the weight of snow always pushed it down. My dad came over last winter and showed me how wedging a broom handle between the roof beam and the floor stopped the sag completely, no tools needed. Has anyone else found a random household item that fixed a backyard storage issue better than anything from the hardware store?

actually that broom handle trick sounds more like a bandaid than a real fix. you're basically just propping up a failing beam with a stick that could snap under any real pressure. snow loads are no joke, and if that broom handle slips or breaks mid winter, you're looking at a collapsed roof and possibly damage to whatever's stored inside. i'd rather spend the $20 on a proper support jack or just reinforce the beam with some lumber from the hardware store. quick fixes like that feel clever in the moment but they usually cause bigger headaches down the line when something fails at the worst possible time.

Gotta say I was totally on the other side of this before reading your post. I always thought those quick wedge tricks were genius, like you were outsmarting the problem with stuff you already had laying around. But you're right, that broom handle is just a stick waiting to fail when you need it most. Snow loads can be brutal and a cheap piece of wood isn't going to hold up if the real beam is already sagging. Id rather spend a few bucks on something that's actually meant for the job than gamble on a winter storm. This honestly changed my whole view on those hacks.
