Finally saw the light on those plastic deck boxes after my 3rd one cracked

I used to think those resin deck boxes from the big box store were good enough for storing my garden tools. Then last winter, the 64-gallon one I bought in September split right down the side after a freeze. Did I just get unlucky, or is cedar the only real option for outdoor storage that lasts more than a season?

Got three seasons out of a rubbermaid tote before the lid warped so bad it wouldn't close right.

Hold up, is this really that bad? I've got a couple of those same totes that have been sitting in my garage for like 5 or 6 years now, lids still snap on fine. Maybe you just got a bad batch or they were sitting in direct sun all day? Just from what I've seen, your mileage may vary but they usually hold up longer than that.

Three years back I left a set of those black and yellow totes in my shed during a Texas summer and the lids were literally curling up at the corners by the end of August. I get what you're saying about garage storage being more forgiving, but if they ever see real heat or moisture it's game over for the plastic. My buddy had a couple stacked in his basement that started cracking along the bottom seams after about four years, just from the humidity alone. It's wild how inconsistent they are because I've also got one that's been holding Christmas decorations since 2018 and it's still mint. Guess you either get lucky or you don't with these things lol.
