My neighbor told me my firewood rack looked like a yard sale, so I rebuilt it with 3 pallets
He wasn't wrong, the tarp and cinder blocks setup was a mess and water was pooling on the bottom row all winter. Been using the open pallet stack for 8 months now in Portland and nothing has rotted, how do you all keep the bottom layer off the wet ground?
Did you ever watch your neighbor's face when you finally got that thing looking decent? I had a buddy in Seattle who stacked his wood right on the dirt for years and half of it turned to mush by spring, so he built a little frame out of scrap 2x4s and laid down a few old fence boards across the bottom. That gave him a couple inches of air under everything and the rain just ran right off instead of soaking up into the wood. I copied the same trick, only I used some leftover deck boards sitting on top of bricks at each corner. Two winters now and the bottom row stays dry as the rest, which never happened with my old cinder block setup. It costs nothing if you already have junk lumber lying around, and pulling a board out is way easier than messing with a tarp every time it rains.
