Watched a guy at a storage auction in Modesto turn a $40 locker into a full yard setup
I went to my first storage unit auction two Saturdays ago in Modesto and it totally changed how I think about my backyard setup. This older guy named Ray won a unit for $40 and inside was a busted wooden workbench, four metal shelving racks, and a stack of clear plastic bins with lids. I figured he was just gonna flip it all, but he told me he hasn't bought a new storage piece in 9 years because auction units are where he gets everything. He spent the next hour showing me how he cuts down the shelving legs to fit under a carport and stacks the bins two high so rain never gets in. I went home and pulled the rotting particle board shelf off my patio and replaced it with a metal rack I got from a unit for $15. My tools have stayed dry through two storms since. Now I check the auction listings every Thursday before I even think about driving to a store. Has anyone else scored storage stuff at an auction, and did you have to modify it to survive outside?
My wife still gives me grief about the time I hauled home a whole truck bed of shelving from an auction and then realized none of it fit where I wanted it. Cut every single leg down with a sawzall in the driveway and somehow made it work anyway. Metal racks from units hold up way better outside than that particle board junk, mine has been through three winters now with no rust issues as long as I hit the legs with spray paint first. Bins stacked two high is smart too, keeps the lids from pooling water.
