Appreciation post: the old tip card at my uncle's diner in Gary that did math the split check apps can't
My uncle ran a diner on Broadway in Gary for 22 years and kept a laminated tip card by the register, and the whole trick was rounding the bill up to the next dollar before taking 15 percent. Every kid waiting tables there learned that move in about five minutes, and nobody ever stiffed us on the math. Now I see folks stare at a split check app for 3 minutes when the total is $47.80 and still get it wrong. Did anyone else learn shortcuts like that from an old-timer before phones did it all for us?
