Dividing the dinner bill wrong starts a fight every time

I was out with 6 people last Friday at a place in Portland. The bill came to $214. One guy pulls out his phone, does the math, and says everyone owes $42.80. Problem is two people only had soup and water, the rest of us had drinks and entrees. I pointed out the split was off by about $9 for the light eaters and he got all defensive about how the calculator said so. We spent 20 minutes re-adding items off the receipt. Has anyone else been in a group where the quick divide by headcount just makes things worse?
