My gas mileage math was off by 14 mpg and I still don't know why

Filled up in Denver last Tuesday and the pump said 9.8 gallons, but dividing my trip meter by that gave me 31 mpg when the car display showed 17. I rechecked three times with the calculator app and got three different answers, so now I just trust the dashboard. Has anyone else had receipts and the car computer disagree this badly?

Did you reset the trip meter at the same fill up?
