My tip calculator confession after a 3 AM diner visit
For years I just doubled the tax to figure out a tip, thinking it was close enough. Then last month I got a $67 bill at a diner in Spokane, doubled the 8% tax, and left $10. The server chased me to the parking lot to say thanks because she thought it was a mistake. I pulled out my phone and realized 8% tax meant double was only 16%, but I had rounded up the tax in my head so bad it was closer to 15%. Now I just use the calculator on my phone like a normal person, and I still wonder how many people I under-tipped over the years. Anyone else have a tipping shortcut that secretly failed them for ages?

Wish they’d teach real tipping math in school, saves us all this trouble.
