Our church potluck attendance doubled after one math mistake

Last spring our signup sheet had a typo, it said bring 18 dishes when we had 9 families. Everyone over-prepared and we had so much food people took home containers. Then the same typo happened in June and again the food overflowed. Now the organizer keeps the "wrong" number on purpose because it works. But yesterday someone did the correct math and we barely had enough for 30 people. Has anyone else seen a flawed calculation accidentally become the best system?
