Spreadsheet vs. paper for counting my inventory, paper won by 45 minutes

I spent 3 hours last weekend building a color-coded spreadsheet to count my used book stock, then the printer ran out of ink and I did it on scrap paper in 2 hours flat. The secret was just tallying by shelf with a pencil, no formulas or sorting, and I caught 12 books the spreadsheet missed because I'd entered them twice. Anyone else found the low-tech route faster for small numbers?
