That cashier who corrected my change math changed how I count bills
Back in 2016 at a gas station off I-80 in Ohio, I handed the kid a $50 for a $23.17 purchase and started doing the pennies-back thing in my head. He stopped me and said, 'Just give me the whole bill, let the register do the work.' I used to always try to make exact change to avoid pennies piling up, but I'd miscalculate and end up shorting myself a dollar or two every week. Now I just hand over whatever bills I have and count the change twice before I walk off. Has anyone else had a stranger's offhand remark fix a dumb habit that cost them real money over time?

Counting change by hand is how you catch register mistakes, not avoid them.
