Watched my electric bill jump $61 in one month and the culprit was a math error, not the AC
So here is the deal. My bill for June was $142, which felt normal for a two bedroom in Phoenix with the AC running nonstop. Then July hit and it came in at $203. I figured it was the heat wave, whatever, I paid it. But my neighbor mentioned her bill only went up like $15, so I started digging because that gap made no sense. I pulled up the last 6 months on the utility's website and compared them side by side, and I noticed the meter reading for July was way higher than any other month, like 3400 kWh versus my usual 2100. Turns out the meter guy transposed two digits when he wrote it down by hand, so they billed me for 1300 extra kilowatt hours I never used. I called and the lady on the phone said it happens more than people think, and they just adjust the next bill after a re-read. Got my credit back this week and the real July bill was actually $158. Anyway, has anyone else caught a mistake like this before you paid it, or did you just eat the cost like I almost did?
