I finally stopped trusting a hot take about flossing after a dentist in Reno called me out
Last month I went to a dentist in Reno for a cleaning and he asked how often I floss. I said twice a week because that's what some guy on a podcast said was enough. He pulled up a chart on his screen and showed me 3 spots where my gums were bleeding, then told me that take was just a guess from someone with no dental training. Now I floss daily and I want to know if anyone else got fooled by a health hot take from a non expert.
The part about "that take was just a guess from someone with no dental training" really hits home for me. I used to brush off flossing because I read somewhere online that it was mostly a waste of time and that rinsing with mouthwash did the same thing. My old dentist never pushed back on it, so I figured I was fine. Then I switched offices and the new hygienist showed me the little ruler thing they use to measure gum pockets, and a few of mine were worse than they should have been for my age. That was the moment I stopped listening to random internet guys about my teeth. Now I floss most nights and my gums barely bleed at cleanings, which never used to be the case. It is wild how much confidence people have about stuff they were never trained in.
